The next morning Owen was gone. Officially he had checked himself into treatment. Eli never learned whether Owen found a way back long enough to send it or whether another mechanic finally grew a conscience. He only knew the warning was too exact to ignore. That was how he burst into the rich geometry of the landing pad and shouted Malcolm’s life back into pause. Savannah recovered first. Eli pulled out the maintenance sheet, already smeared by sweat. One of the pilots came closer, frowned, and shouted something to the copilot over the rotor wash. Wesley took a half step back. It was a good lie because wealth trains people to believe poor men always want something. Malcolm almost moved toward the helicopter again. Eli saw the moment and knew mere accusation would fail. So he lowered his voice until it somehow cut sharper than the rotor noise. “Then prove me wrong,” he said. “Step onto it first.”

The words struck with surgical cruelty because they required nothing but honesty. Savannah froze. The color slipped out of her face in visible stages. Her smile did not just vanish. It collapsed. Malcolm turned toward her slowly, and the pilots turned too. One of the security men glanced at Wesley, who was already edging away from the steps. Another grabbed his arm. That single line changed everything. Ethan Vane, the dutiful son from Malcolm’s first marriage, had publicly despised Savannah for years. Everyone assumed he would benefit if she were disgraced, not if his father died. Malcolm looked at the broken phone, then at the stopped helicopter, then at Eli with a gaze no longer focused on survival but on inheritance, blood, and betrayal.
