The nearest thing to a public reckoning was not a papal press conference about Tagle’s soul. It was personnel.

In November 2022 Francis removed Tagle early from the presidency of Caritas Internationalis after an external review found management failures that damaged morale and teamwork. That was public. It hurt Tagle as an administrator. It did not end him. He stayed in evangelization. After Francis died, Leo kept him there. That is continuity with a demerit on the file, not a late-life denunciation.

A 2025–26 book on Leo’s election reports that Tagle received few votes, trailing Parolin and Robert Prevost. Some electors doubted that Tagle or Parolin were assertive enough for Vatican finance and governance. Critics pointed at uneven handling of abuse; Philippine bishops pushed back before the vote. The Caritas episode did not help. Conservatives recirculated a 2019 clip of Tagle singing along to an instrumental of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Opponents called the song an atheist anthem. Defenders called a karaoke peace lyric a thin reason to sink a pontificate. None of that is Francis standing up in 2026 and telling the world the truth about a protégé. Francis was already dead. The conclave was the electoral truth. The smear was opposition research. The Albano title and the Sheen Mass are the present tense.

## Why “why now?” has no answer

“Why has Pope Francis chosen to disclose this at this time?” has no answer, because Francis is not choosing anything. Leo XIV has been pope since May 2025. In 2026 Tagle is in Jakarta, in Manila, on Sunday television, and on a plane to Missouri for a beatification Leo asked him to represent. That is the international stage he is actually on.

If the Church’s power is shifting, the visible shift is from an Argentine Jesuit who recentered the periphery to an American Augustinian who still staffs the missionary dicastery with Francis’s Asian cardinal. That is succession with a new signature, not a scandal drop.

## What would actually alter the Church’s power

A real “exposure” would look like a canonical process, a removal, a financial finding, or a public break with the reigning pope. None of those attach to Tagle in September 2026. He is still the Asian face of evangelization, still papabile in the next math, still the man some conservatives tried to stop with a song clip and some electors passed over for not seeming hard enough on money.

Francis’s last surprise, if the book title is right, was Leo XIV — not a dossier on Tagle. The association that “sparked interest and controversy” was always in daylight: a pope from the Global South elevating a cardinal from the Global South, then discovering that warmth and Curial management are different gifts. The Caritas firing was the administrative truth. The conclave vote was the electoral truth. The Albano title and the Sheen Mass are the job that remains.

There is no withheld revelation Francis has now decided to release. There is a dead pope, a living one, and a cardinal still doing the work Francis gave him under a successor who kept him there. That is the record. The rest is a thumbnail looking for a pontiff who can no longer speak.
